How Friendly Should Landlords And Tenants Be?

It is easy to see why some folk think tenants and landlords are enemies. There are cases when the landlord wins or prospers; it is at the expense of the landlord. There are also times when the tenant claims victory over a landlord’s wishes or intentions. Therefore, some people think tenants and landlords are adversaries.

The relationship between tenant and landlord shouldn’t be this way. There are many instances when both tenants and landlords prosper together, and these positive outcomes are enhanced when both groups work together. At Student Circle, we take immense pride in bringing tenants and landlords together. We also believe landlords and tenants should have a friendly relationship, as this develops a bond that ensures both parties are better off.

Buy a present for your tenants

We have been known to encourage landlords to buy wine for their tenants, often as a house-warming gift or welcoming present. You don’t need to give wine; you could offer beer, chocolates, flowers or any nice gift that helps you start your relationship pleasantly. This style of reward isn’t limited to when a tenant moves in.

If there is an anniversary of when a tenant moved in or the tenant has achieved success, the landlord can acknowledge their success. We also believe tenants and landlords should be on each other’s Christmas card lists!

The reason we believe that landlords should be friendly to tenants is that it develops a relationship, and this brings longer-term benefits. When you are close with a tenant, they are more likely to pay their rent on time, and they are more likely to maintain the condition of the rental property. All landlords want these outcomes, but not enough landlords work hard enough or put in the effort to achieve these outcomes.

If you develop a relationship and bond with the tenant, they will be far more likely to treat you with respect or be helpful to you.

Tenants should be nice to landlords

Of course, being polite and courteous isn’t a one-way street. At Student Circle, we also encourage tenants to be friendly to their landlords. Having a friendship can make life easier for tenants, with the landlord offering them more leeway or aiding them when issues arise.

For student tenants, living away from home for the first can be a difficult situation. As a tenant, you want to develop a support circle around you. Having friends you can trust aids you in life, and when you are friends with the person who is responsible for the roof over your head, you will find fewer things worry you.

There will always be a professional aspect to the landlord and tenant relationship. When money is involved, there is a need for rules and mutual respect. However, it is possible to be professional and friendly.

At Studentcircle, we aim to bring landlords and tenants together to the benefit of everyone. We think landlords and tenants can be friends to each other’s interest, and we would encourage our clients to be open to this style of working relationship.

Whether you are a landlord or tenant in Coventry, if you need assistance, contact Student Circle, and we will be delighted to assist you.
